Full Employment and Self Reliance are the two aims SEWA Delhi has in common with all organisations in the SEWA Movement.
These goals are drivers of the larger objective, that is, creation of solidarity and sustainable livelihoods among women in the informal economy.
About Us
Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA) is a women's organization that actively promotes organising, awareness-raising and skill-building programs, for female workers in order to bring them into the main stream of the economy, while also taking part in advocacy-related projects to bring attention to the problems faced by women working in the informal sector. The organization was founded by Ela R. Bhat in 1972 in Ahmedabad and is currently active in 19 states of India as autonomous bodies yet following the same ideologies and ethos.
With one lakh members, we at SEWA organize workers to achieve their goals of full employment and self-reliance through the strategy of struggle and development. The struggle is against many odds and limitations imposed on them by the society and the economy, while development activities strengthen women’s bargaining power and offer them new alternatives which further their self-reliance. Practically, the strategy is carried out through the joint action of unions and cooperatives where Agewans serve as the primary mobilization agents.
