SEWA Delhi's exhibition on “Streets, Homes, Landfills: Women in City's Waste Management”

“If all of us stop working for a week, Delhi will drown in waste.” Shared one of our waste segregators when asked about her work. With around 150,000 waste recyclers in Delhi, they play an integral part of our city’s waste management, saving the municipality a crore daily, recycling 2,000 tonnes of paper, plastic, metals and glass on an everyday basis. However, being in the informal sector and living in inadequate housing further exacerbates the challenges they face in their everyday lives.

This exhibition is being organized in collaboration with SEWA Delhi, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, SEWA Bharat, and WIEGO.

With this exhibition, we aim to create a space that recognizes and validates the critical work done by women in waste management in Delhi and West Bengal, India. It seeks to illuminate the dire consequences of inadequate women's rights, inequality, and the lack of decent working conditions. Additionally, it addresses the urgent issue of violence against women and advocates for a more just and equitable society.
